Adhering Ultratherm UTH to Tank
Despite the name, these Ultratherm Under Tank Heaters (UTHs) should be applied to the back wall of your hermit crab tank, not underneath.
These heaters are plug and use. If you are putting them on the back of the enclosure, use a little duct tape in the corners to hold it to the hermit crab tank or reptile cage.
Ultratherm heat pads do not come with an adhesive for you to attach them to your enclosure. This is preferred so that you may attach and re-attach the heat mat as needed.
Ideal Temperature Range
80 degrees F to 85 degrees F is the ideal temperature range in hermit crab enclosures. This is best achieved with the heat pad placed on the back of the tank to provide gradient heat (warm zones and cool zones).
The UTH should cover 90% of the back wall, so choose the size that has a length closest to your total tank length, and a height closest to half your tank height. A couple of inches of overlap with the substrate is okay, but try to apply the UTH above the substrate line if possible.
Keep in mind, for reptiles you have to let them thermoregulate. This means heating only 1/3 to 1/2 of the tank so they have a warm side and a cool side. Sizing needs will be different for reptiles than for hermit crab tanks, due to this difference.
The following size recommendations assume the minimum requirement of substrate depth (though half of the tank height is the ideal depth of substrate).
